I’ve seen/heard people discuss ‘has a less advanced species ever controlled/ruled over a more advanced one’ wrt ai stuff, and I think I have a novel take on this. Yea, it’s cats.
Pet cats get a far better deal than their owners and live a more comfortable life, you may argue their owner exerts some control over them, but I would say it’s just agreed upon contract(where the cat gets everything it could ever want w/o effort, provided it holds a few impulses in).
Further, in places like Cyprus or Istanbul, an ‘owner’ isn’t even necessary. A street cat will be vaccinated and fed and loved without being expected to provide anything in return, ie tribute. Such a cat can also opt in or out of being out in the street by being extra cute to a human, or running off to have unrestrained freedom.
They do not understand the internet, and yet, the internet surely has made them even more popular, and hence populous. It would not even remotely shock me that in 2040, cats outnumber humans in most countries, and maybe even have significant stray populations cared for as communal pets, dependent on shelter/stray policies.
I’d be an Istanbul stray or pet to someone before I’d be a human, it’s a significantly smoother and less constrained experience. While AI isn’t high on my list of things I think or worry about, if AGI happens, I’d be happy to be its metaphorical cat, and would suggest to those worried to try and optimize for becoming such.
